VCNB introduces new mobile app

Move over TouchBanking – there’s a new app in town!

VCNB Mobile is now available to make your mobile banking experience better than ever! This free app allows you to bank on the go using your favorite mobile device. Most tablets and smart phones are supported including Apple, Android and Amazon.

The new app was introduced last week to replace TouchBanking. It is designed to be easier to find and use than our old app. We sincerely hope you like what you see!

If you were a TouchBanking customer, you should have been prompted to update your app the first time you launched the app on or after May 28. For those of you new to mobile banking, you can download VCNB Mobile from your app store. Once the app is downloaded, you will be asked to enter your access ID which is the same as your Online Banking username. You will then be prompted to answer one of your previously set security questions before entering your password.

If you haven’t used our mobile banking service, you may be wondering why this is such big news.

Truth be told, we couldn’t be more excited. Mobile banking is one of the fastest growing segments in banking and our VCNB Mobile has capabilities that allow us to compete with the big banks while still providing you with the great customer service of a small town bank.

With mobile banking, you can check balances, transfer funds, pay bills and more! Plus, you can use the app and the camera on your smart phone to deposit checks into your account for just .50 cents per deposit.

Remember, with VCNB Mobile you can tend to your money and accounts from anywhere in the world that you can use your phone or tablet. From a deck chair at the beach, to your comfy chair at home, to the front row at the PTA meeting, VCNB Mobile is there for you.

Here are the instructions for getting started:

– Visit your phone or tablet’s app store and download VCNB Mobile

– Enter your Access ID (online banking username)

– Answer your previously set Online Banking security question

– Enter your Online Banking Password

Earn Points With Your VCNB Visa® Platinum Card

If you are a VCNB Visa® Platinum credit card customer, you are now earning UChoose Rewards Points. The UChoose Rewards program allows you to earn one reward point for every dollar spent in purchases on your Visa Platinum Credit Card.

Those points can be redeemed for tons of great merchant gift cards, movie tickets, merchandise, travel and other exciting products via the UChoose Rewards site. While you are automatically earning your one point per dollar, you must enroll at the UChoose website to view and redeem your points.

Also on this website you will find opportunities to earn extra points by spending money at your favorite merchants.

Some merchants offer you extra points for shopping in their stores or online. For example, through May 27, Kohls is offering three points per dollar if you spend at least $50 with them. CVS is offering two points per dollar when you spend $50. Payless is offering 15 points per dollar spent with no minimum purchase required. If you like Italian food, Bucca di Beppo is offering twenty points for every dollar spent in their restaurant with no minimum purchase required.

If you wish to take advantage of these extra point earning opportunities, merchants typically require a simple activation via the UChoose site.

These are just a few of the offers available at this time and they do change regularly. The best way to keep up is to periodically visit the UChoose site. You can check your points balance, find point earning opportunities at your favorite merchants and redeem those points from the website.

Popmoney® Personal Payment Service – If you owe someone money you can send funds from your account to theirs. All you need to know is their mobile phone number or email address. It does cost .50 per transaction but that is cheaper (and easier) than writing and mailing a check or hitting the ATM.

View Rates – You’re thinking about opening a CD but you want to know the rate. You can find all this online now!

Pay Bills – This is the big one for a lot of people. Once you enter the information for your payees, their information is stored. So when you go to Online Bill Pay, all you have to do is enter the amount of the bill and the date you wish the bill to be paid. Better yet, many customers appreciate automatic bill pay which ensures that your bills are paid on the same day every month. Bill Pay is free as long as you use it at least once a month. There is a $3 fee if you do not use it monthly.

Online Chat – If you have questions but can’t visit an office or talk on the phone, online chat is a great option. Just find the chat button on our home page and type a question or comment. Someone will help you right away.

A Health Savings Account (HSA) is an easy way to save for healthcare expenses and now you can open your account online at VCNB! We hope this new feature, which we recently added to our website, will help customers who want an HSA but can’t make it in to a branch.

They say an apple a day will keep the doctor away. A Health Savings Account will help you prepare for the things an apple just can’t take fix.

An HSA is more than just a savings account. It is a tax favored account that allows you to pay for qualified medical expenses if you have a high deductible insurance plan. Better Together

Some things are simply better together.

That’s how we feel about our checking and savings accounts here at VCNB. One is great but the two are even better together!

Think of your checking account as a place to manage your money. This is a transactional account from which you can make frequent withdrawals. You can do this by making debit card purchases at point-of-sale machines or by writing checks. You can make ATM withdrawals or come into the bank to withdrawal or deposit money. You can even pay bills online.

A savings account is a different kind of animal. Instead of using this account for daily transactions, a savings account is used for . . . you guessed it! Saving money!

It’s a great place to tuck away funds for an emergency or for a rainy day. If you’re planning a vacation or getting ready for Christmas, a savings account is a great option for keeping those funds separate from your daily spending money. While it’s kept in savings, your funds will grow some with interest.

Because federal law dictates that you can only make six savings withdrawals per month, this is a perfect place to park money and forget it until you actually need the cash. One time or periodic transfers of funds from your checking to savings make saving money much easier.

Right now, we are rewarding customers who open a new checking and savings at one time. From now through March 31, 2015, open a Checking My Way or Classic checking account and accept a debit card to receive a cash bonus of $100. If you open a Passbook savings account at the same time as the checking, you will receive an additional cash bonus of $50.

Create a savings plan for 2015

Did you save enough in 2014? Do you have enough money tucked away for retirement? How about for a small emergency? What if the furnace blows next month or your car needs repairs? Do you have enough in savings to get by? If you’re like most Americans, the answer is a resounding no.

Most financial experts recommend that you pay yourself first. That means before you pay rent, buy groceries or go to the movies, you set aside a portion of your income. We recommend that you create a monthly budget to see where your money is going. In doing so, set a savings goal for each paycheck. If you think there isn’t room for savings, take a closer look at frivolous expenses or impulse buys that could be draining your checking account (Click here to read about 35 ways to save some dollars).

Once you know how much you want to save, you just need to decide where to tuck the money away to keep it safe. If you are just starting out, the best approach is to open a savings account. At VCNB we offer a personal savings account that requires an opening balance of $100 for adults with no minimum for minors. Interest is paid on this account if it has a balance of $100 or more.

Once you have a savings account, you can deposit funds at the bank, with direct deposit and with Online Banking. You can even set up automatic transfers to ensure the funds actually make it to savings. Once it’s there, try not to touch the money unless there is a true emergency.

If you have a high deductible insurance plan, another great savings option is the Health Savings Account (HSA). While some banks charge large fees for an HSA, VCNB offers this account for free if you accept a monthly e-statement rather than a paper statement. If you wish to receive a paper statement, the account fee is $3 per month. There is a one-time $25 set up fee for this account that is waved if you have this coupon. Basically, an HSA is a tax favored way to save money for qualified medical expenses.

If you don’t use the money you deposited into your HSA this year, the funds will roll over to the next year. For many young people with lower medical expenses, this is a great way to begin saving for later in life when medical expenses typically become more burdensome. If you already have a nest egg but would like to earn more interest for your savings, a good investment is an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) or Certificate of Deposit (CD) with VCNB. With all the shopping, gift giving, eating out and all around festive fun that happens at every turn during the holidays, there are plenty of times you need to repay someone (or hope they will repay you!) all month long.

At .50 cents per transaction, the Popmoney personal payment service allows you to send money quickly for a lot less than it costs to send a check in the mail. It’s also faster than going to the ATM or the bank for cash. Don’t believe us? Here are five ways you could use Popmoney this month.

Split the cost for the boss’ gift – Your co-worker picked up a gift and now you need to pay your share. Too bad you don’t have any cash, right? Wrong. Armed with only your co-worker’s email address or mobile phone number, you can repay her today in just a few simple steps. By logging in to your VCNB Online Banking, you can type in her name, the amount you wish to send and her email address or phone number. She will receive a text or email with instructions for claiming her funds.

Send a gift – Your nephews in California are teenagers now and you have no idea what to get them. What kind of kid doesn’t like cash? Just send them a monetary gift via Popmoney and wait for the thank you text!

Dinner out – Some restaurants will not break up the check for a large party.
