Teach Teens Money Skills With Student Checking

Every parent wants their child to succeed in life. One way to help them get off on the right foot is to give them a strong financial foundation on which to stand, build and grow. That does not necessarily mean giving them a lot of money but instead helping them understand how to use and manage the money they do have.

Whether they have just a small weekly allowance, pay from an after school job, or have a large savings, it is important for young people to spend their teen years learning how to pay for things and how to manage a checking or savings account.

One way to accomplish this is to help them open a Student Checking My Way account at VCNB. This account is designed especially for teens ages 14-17 and provides them with access to a traditional checking account with mobile and online banking, a debit card and account alerts.

Young customers will have access to a debit card and the spending abilities that come with it.

The account also comes with a host of ways to safely monitor activity and to manage the account electronically. Account alerts can be set to notify you or your teen of account activity. Sign up to receive a text or email for a variety of account activities including whenever the debit card is used or when the balance falls below an amount that you set.

Online banking and mobile banking make it easy to see where and when money is spent, to transfer funds between accounts and to view bank statements.

We encourage parents and teens to work together so that young people are experienced at handling their bank account and prepared to manage their funds by the time they graduate high school. This very basic step can make a tremendous difference when a young graduate is venturing out into the world.

Remember though, a parent or guardian must be made joint account owner. This account can be opened online or in any of our sixteen banking centers.

What’s On Your Wish List?

2017 Construction & HELOC - VCNB (Rt. 93S & Rt. 50 Clear Channel Lamar)

What’s on your wish list? A big kitchen for family meals? Perhaps a new garage to protect your vehicle from the weather? How about a pool just in time for summer parties? With a Home Equity Loan at VCNB, you can make these dreams come true. Open a new Home Equity Line Credit before April 30 and receive an introductory Annual Percentage Rate (APR) of 2.99%.

A Home Equity Loan or HELOC is a revolving form of credit that uses your home as collateral. The amount of your credit line depends on how much equity you’ve built up in your home. Lots of homeowners enjoy using the equity they have achieved in their homes to make improvements that will increase their resale values or enhance their quality of life.

Lender Speak: Tips For Choosing A Contractor

You’ve picked out your building site, you have your house plans and you’re ready to build a home. Congratulations! You must be excited! New home construction is one of the most exciting projects that our lenders get to work on. It’s also one of the most complex and has potential to be frustrating. That’s where a seasoned lender and a good contractor come in. VCNB employs some smart lenders who have been in this line of work for a lot of years. Today, we asked a few of them to weigh in with their tips for choosing a good contractor.

“My best advice is to take your time and ask lots of questions. First, get an estimate from more than one contractor and look at their history. You want to use a contractor with a solid history and not someone doing their first job. Another important thing to do is to look at other jobs they have done.”

“Interview and meet with a lot of different builders. Look for a builder you will connect with and who you trust will meet your expectations.”
Donna Kopis

“Choosing the right builder is the biggest decision one will have to make when building a home. I suggest speaking with multiple builders. Then choose one you feel you can trust to build the home the way you want and in a timely manner. It is vital to choose the builder who communicates clearly with you.”

“I have been fortunate to be involved in construction lending for nearly 20 yrs. Though customers may not realize it, a seasoned construction lender can help the process of building a home go smoother by helping them avoid common pitfalls and helping maintain the relationship between customer, lender, and contractor. Customers should be prepared to do a good deal of homework up front and that includes choosing the right contractor. The wrong contractor will make the project a nightmare very quickly and a struggle to complete. I encourage the customer to ask for references from the contractor and go look at some of their work including some projects that are in the process of being completed. Also, ask your lender about the contractor you are considering. If the lender is not familiar with the contractor, they will need to meet to make sure they are agreeable to our procedures. Those procedures are there for a reason and can help make sure we get a finished project. Ultimately, the customer and the bank are at risk until we get a finished project and neither of us want an unfinished home.”

Make The Holidays Easier With VCNB

Tis the season for holiday giving and that means you’ll probably be doing a lot of spending. VCNB has a product called Popmoney® personal payment service that is perfect for the holidays and today we’re talking about three times it might come in handy for you!

This service allows you to send money to another person electronically. All you need is the mobile phone number or email address to send the funds and it’s easy for them to have it deposited into the bank account of their choice. Each transaction costs just .50 cents, making it an affordable, easy and relatively quick way to get money to another person. Popmoney can be used from our mobile app, VCNB Mobile or through Online Bill Pay so you can literally send funds at any time.

Shared Gift Giving – In a lot of workplaces, co-workers combine their resources to buy their boss a nicer gift. If you’re like a lot of Americans, you may not carry a lot of cash or your checkbook to work. Pay your share by sending your contribution electronically to the person collecting the funds.

Festive Meal With Friends – Your group is going out for dinner to celebrate but the restaurant requires a party of your size pay on one check. Don’t make your friend who’s footing the bill wait for your share! Just send them the funds via Popmoney, right there from the dinner table!

Last Minute Gift  – Forgot to buy a gift for someone on your list? No sweat! You can use Popmoney to send them cash, along with a holiday greeting!

Remember, you can also use Popmoney to request funds! Say you’re in charge of buying mom and dad’s gift from you and your siblings. Let your brothers and sisters know how much they owe by sending a request via Popmoney. They can respond to that request directly, and send the money right back to you. No muss, no fuss and no excuse for your baby brother not to pay his share!

How might you use Popmoney this holiday season? Tell us in the comments section below!

VCNB Debit Cards: Fraud, Frozen Cards And How To Prevent This From Happening To You

Our customers are mobile. They travel around the neighborhood, the nation and the globe. As they go about their day, working, running errands and having fun, we find that our customers are relying on their debit and credit cards as a primary form of payment and we love that! We are glad when our customers are so comfortable with VCNB that they want to use our cards.

Yet we want to remind customers that technology is not flawless and that on occasion, paying with your card isn’t possible. In fact, there are a few things we hope you will remember.

Fraud is rampant in our society today. That’s why we have 24-hour fraud protection for our customers. When our Fraud Department sees suspicious activity, they will take steps to protect you. That means the suspicious charge could be declined. It means our Fraud Department will attempt to call you to confirm the purchase and that means they will turn off your card if they cannot reach you. We understand this can be an inconvenience but most customers would prefer to be inconvenienced for a few minutes rather than have a stranger stealing their money.

Sometimes whatever caused the red flag is indeed fraudulent activity. Sometimes it’s really the customer, just spending outside their regular pattern or with a retailer that is known for higher than normal rates of fraud.

For example, if you buy gasoline in Lancaster, Ohio and ten minutes later a charge in California shows up on your card, there will be suspicion of fraud.

When there is a suspicious charge we will call whatever number you have on file with the bank. If you’re out shopping and the only number we have is your landline, you have no way of knowing there’s an issue until your card is declined. When you get home you’ll find a message that provides a case number and requests a return call for something we could have cleared up while you were at the register.

That’s why we ask our customers to provide their mobile phone number. This is an easy way you can do your part in keeping your accounts safe while minimizing the inconvenience.

We also cannot stress enough the importance of carrying a second form of payment. We’ve known customers to travel hundreds of miles from home with nothing in their wallet but a single piece of plastic. If catastrophe strikes and your card is lost, stolen or shut off because it was victim to fraud, you may find yourself in dire circumstances. Always carry a second form of payment – a little cash or another card will be a lifesaver if you have issues with your favorite card.

Now through the end of 2016 we are offering VCNB prepaid gift cards with no purchase fees. Accepted anywhere that Mastercard® can be used, these gift cards are a terrific second form of payment.

Also remember that if your card is declined, repeatedly swiping your debit card will not make it work and may even cause your card to be turned off. Instead, contact your local branch or Customer Service  during business hours or our Fraud Department at 1.800.262.2024.

We know our customers love the convenience of swiping their card. We love it too! Just remember to protect yourself by carrying that emergency second form of payment and by giving us your mobile phone number.

VCNB Is Saying Thanks!

thank-you-fbbc-nauman-digital

November is the month of Thanksgiving and we want to use this time to thank our customers for another great year. As a community bank we have the opportunity to not just meet our customers, but to get to know them, and we can say with certainty that some truly wonderful people bank with VCNB.

Here’s how we’re saying thanks:

Earn 5,000 Points – Customers both new and existing can earn 5,000 bonus points by opening a Rewards Checking account online now through the end of the year. Rewards Checking has been extremely popular with our customers and employees because it provides the opportunity to earn UChoose® Rewards Points for every day banking habits. That means you can earn points for dollars spent with your debit card, for using Bill Pay and other VCNB products.  Those points can be used for gift cards for your favorite restaurants and retailers, for gifts, travel and even cash back! Click here to learn more about Rewards Checking.

Free Mobile Deposit – Mobile Deposit is now free for VCNB Mobile customers! Use the camera on your smart phone to take pictures of your check inside the VCNB Mobile app. Your check is deposited into the checking or savings account of your choice, saving you a trip to the bank!

No Purchase Fee Gift Cards – We all have folks on our list who are hard to buy for or who simply like to receive gift cards for holidays and birthdays. Through December 31, our VCNB prepaid gift cards are now free of purchase fees. These cards can be used anywhere that Mastercard© is accepted. Secure, even for online purchases, this is a great gift for anyone. Prepaid gift cards are available in any denomination up to $1,000.

Giving Back – We try to be good neighbors by supporting community organizations and events throughout the year. During the holidays we like to partner with our customers to help some special organizations that are close to our hearts. Every VCNB office is accepting monetary contributions to assist a local organization including food banks, Project Backpack and even a local humane society. Stop by your local office to find out what we’re doing in your neighborhood.

Contests – Throughout November and December we are giving away a $100 gift card every week to one lucky winner on Facebook. Visit our page to learn more about our weekly contests!

We love our customers and hope you will love the things we are doing to say thanks!  Learn more by clicking here!

Keep Your Debit Card Running Smoothly

We rely on our debit cards for nearly everything these days. Today we have two suggestions for how you can protect your card and keep your VCNB debit card running smoothly.

The first thing we want to discuss is CardValet. If you would like to have more power over your debit card, this is for you! VCNB recently rolled out this free app that allows you to apply spending restrictions and even turn your card on and off whenever you wish.

Alerts – Sign up for alerts with parameters you choose including amount, location and merchant type. For example, you can request an alert if your card is used at a gas station or if the purchase exceeds a set amount. Customers say the text arrives before they have even returned the card to their wallet.

Power Switch – One of our favorite features is that you can turn your card on when you’re using it and turn it off when you’re not. It takes just a moment and ensures that it can’t be used without your consent.

Geographic  – Limit the geographic area where your card can be used. Some customers choose to limit usage to their favorite neighborhood or even to require that their phone be present for the card to work. You can also turn off international usage.

Dollar amounts – Set limits for overall usage or for specific vendor categories. If you typically spend less than $100 at the grocery, set the grocery category limit for $100. If you need to spend more, simply change or remove the limit for that transaction. You can even limit the amount of any one transaction.

Vendor limitations – Parents will love using this feature! You can limit the types of vendors where your card can be used. Categories include restaurants, entertainment, gas, grocery and department stores. Give your teens the freedom to use your card for purchases they need but limit the places where they can spend.

Want to learn more? Watch a demo video in our Learning Center!

Ready to use CardValet? Download the CardValet app from the Apple® app store or Google Play™ Once you have the app installed on your phone, it’s easy to register and get started. As always, we encourage customers to set strong passwords and to not share that information with others.  Multiple VCNB debit cards can be linked and customers will soon be able to use VCNB credit cards with the app as well.

The other way to keep things running smoothly is extremely easy – just keep your mobile phone number updated with VCNB. We ask for your cell number so we can reach you immediately if there’s a problem with your account. We hate to brag but we have a really good fraud department. If they detect something unusual happening with your debit or credit card they may restrict your card and call to confirm that you are indeed responsible for the purchase that raised a red flag.  Calling your home won’t help if you’re trying to buy something in a store. So give us a call or ask to update your number the next time you’re in the bank!

Last Minute Savings For The Holidays

Christmas is about two months away.  Are you a last minute shopper who charges holiday expenses or have you been saving and planning for this all year? Our hat’s off to all you planners out there but if you’re not so prepared we have some thoughts to help you prep for the most expensive time of year:

Make a list and set a budget – List each person you’re buying for, the items you wish to give them and assign a cost estimate for each one. Also list all those extra holiday expenses like cards, postage, family photos, party expenses, dinners out and other special events that occur throughout the season. Having a total in mind will give you a savings goal. Is the goal too high? Consider ways to cut corners but remember to stick to the list when you shop.

Cut discretionary spending – With Christmas just a few paychecks away, now is the time to reduce spending on the things you don’t really need. Your child needs new shoes but does she need an expensive pair? Do you eat out a lot? We don’t want to tell you how to spend your money but encourage you to think before you spend. Is this item today worth cutting corners later?

Reduce household expenses – On a related note, think about your major household expenses. Can you cut back your cable package or reduce your electric bill? When was the last time you cost-compared car insurance? Can you prepare less expensive meals? You may find there is more than one way to save a few bucks around the house.

Find inspiration to jumpstart your savings with this VCNB story that features 35 ways to save!

Look for discounts – Thanks to a competitive retail environment and the internet, there are tons of ways to save money these days. In addition to traditional coupon clipping, you will find promo codes for discounts and free shipping. There are also websites that sell discounted gift cards and tons of websites that will help you cost compare your purchases. Always look for ways to save on what you’re buying.

Get rewarded – If you’re shopping with your VCNB Platinum Visa® credit card or your Rewards Checking debit card, you have the potential to earn points for purchases. Those points can be redeemed later for gift cards, travel and other items. Points earned with your Rewards Checking debit card can be redeemed for cash back too.

If you think there’s no way you can save enough to pay for all these seasonal expenses, remember that VCNB offers both a Classic and Platinum Visa® credit card for qualified applicants. With the VCNB Platinum Visa, cardholders can earn UChoose® Rewards Points for purchases made with the card. Click here to learn more about our credit cards  and contact your local office to apply.

Want to better prepare for next year? Consider a VCNB Christmas Club account!

Folks who now have a Christmas Club with VCNB will receive their checks this week. We’ve been helping them squirrel away small amounts of money every two weeks since last October so they would have a handsome savings in time for this year’s holiday shopping. Their club will automatically renew for their convenience so they will be getting a jump start on 2017 holiday savings.

If you’re interested in opening your own Christmas Club account, it’s important to note that Christmas Club members determine how much they wish to contribute to their Christmas Club. Want to save a thousand dollars? We’ll divide that amount into twenty-six payments that will be automatically transferred from your checking or savings account to your Christmas Club. In mid-October 2017, your funds will be direct deposited into the checking or savings account of your choice or sent to you as a paper check.

Stop by or call your local branch to get your Christmas Club started today!
