Have You Tried Rewards Checking?

We have been amazed at the customer response to our new VCNB Rewards Checking account. When we introduced this account to customers last year, we knew we had something special but we weren’t expecting such an incredible response. Months later, we continue to hear from customers about how much they love this account and we are simply delighted. After all, community banks are about providing personal service to customers and providing them with the banking tools they need and want.

If you haven’t tried Rewards Checking, it’s exactly what it sounds like: a checking account that rewards you for your regular banking habits. You receive points for spending money with your debit card, for using direct deposit and Online Bill Pay, among other things. We even give you points to get you started when you open the account.

Those points can be used to receive cash back and gift cards for major retailers and restaurants. You can also use those points for travel expenses, merchandise and experiences like concert tickets.

We are thrilled to offer this account and to reward our customers for their loyalty.

If you have signed up for Rewards Checking, we have a reminder for you: Be sure to register your debit card with the UChoose Rewards® website so that you can begin earning and spending all those points! Registering is very simple and can be done by clicking here.

Once you’re registered, take a look for special offers under the “Earn Points” tab. Here you will find point earning opportunities that are only good online as well as some special opportunities that must be activated to learn. You can also browse all the great things you can redeem your points for under the “Redeem Points” tab.

Banking For College Students

If you’re headed off to college this fall, you’ve probably signed up for your classes, picked up supplies for your dorm room and are packing up to leave soon. But have you thought about how to manage your money or how to get money from home?

Electronic banking has done wonders for us all, making it easier to manage our money and even to receive money from others. Here are some VCNB products that will make your financial life better:

Checking Account
Everyone needs a checking account. Even if you don’t have a job or a lot of money to manage, a checking account is the best way to handle the funds you have. A Checking My Way or Rewards Checking account are great options for most young adults. Click here and select “Checking Accounts” to learn about these accounts and to open online!

VCNB Mobile/Online Banking
teenager laptop cell phone headphones.jpgYou may be far from home but we offer two convenient tools for accessing your money 24/7 from anywhere your smartphone or computer works. Login to your accounts at www.VCNBfamily.com or with VCNB Mobile, our easy to use mobile app. Here you can check balances, transfer funds, pay bills and a deposit a check with Mobile Deposit. You can also access Popmoney® personal payment service. Not sure what all this means? Keep reading. We’ll explain!

Transfers
With online and mobile banking, you can transfer funds between your accounts. Say you saved all your graduation cash in your savings account but need some to buy a textbook or pay for a movie ticket. You can easily and quickly transfer the funds into the account where you need them. It’s easy and a free service.

Account Alerts
Since this is your first time managing money on your own, it’s a good idea to keep a sharp eye on what you’re doing. You can set up account alerts to tell you when your balance falls below a certain amount of money, when your debit card has been used to make a purchase and when a deposit is made to your account among other things. There are nineteen different types of account alerts,  each of which can be sent via text or email free of charge.

Popmoney
Popmoney® personal payment service allows you to securely send and receive money quickly, using just the recipient’s email or mobile phone number and your own VCNB checking or savings account. A lot of our customers use it to pay back friends and family or to send gifts. We also have many parents and grandparents who use it to send money to their college students who are always grateful for the extra cash! There is a fee of .50 per transaction and you can learn more about it here.

Reloadable Card
A Reloadable Mastercard© is a good option for those who do not qualify for a traditional checking or who don’t want one for fear of accidental overdraft. This card is accepted anywhere that takes Mastercard but is loaded for a specific amount of money. Once it’s spent, it’s gone and there is no risk of overdrawing an account. Funds can be directed deposited or be added as you wish. Reloadable cards are great for college students as parents are able to deposit money as needed. You must be 18 years of age to purchase and there is a $5.99 purchase fee and other fees related to reloading and maintaining this card. Click here for complete details including fees.

At VCNB we are excited to see young people venture out on their own and will be glad to help you get started by answering questions and setting you up with VCNB accounts and other products. Give us a call or stop by our office to talk to an experienced account representative today!

Tricks For A Smooth Move

woman sitting on green meadow with many boxes

A little organization today will save you time and money later as you unpack at your new home.

Whether it’s your first home or your dream home, buying and moving can be stressful. We put on our thinking caps and came up with some practical tips and tricks to help make your move go smoothly.

Consider the Necessities
Think about what you will need when you first arrive. Designate an easy to recognize container such as a clear tote or brightly colored box to make into your “Need First” box. Pack inside trash bags, paper towels, toilet paper, tools, phone chargers, simple snacks, a set of sheets for every bed and other things that are important to you. If coffee is a must have in your house, pack the coffee maker and supplies in this container. The point is to keep together all those necessities that you won’t want to go searching for among a sea of boxes.

While you’re at it, have every member of your family pack an overnight bag with a change of clothes, toiletries, medicine and other items they might take with them on a trip.

Advance Work
Collect packing supplies and begin packing gradually. It will seem like less work and will give you more time to pack carefully. Be sure to start with things you don’t use frequently like grandma’s china, out of season clothes and family mementos.

Purge as you go. If you don’t use it or don’t like it, don’t pack it. These items can be sold in a yard sale, donated to charity or offered to friends.

Change your address before you move. Be sure to notify, not just the Post Office, but your credit card company, cell phone provider and your bank. We love when our customers tell us they’re moving so we can keep contact information up to date.

For a few weeks leading up to your move, make an effort to eat out of your pantry and freezer instead of grocery shopping. Remember, the more you use, the less you have to move or lose!

Try to clean your new home before moving day. Whether you clean it yourself or pay for a service, it’s better to move into a clean house than to clean as you go.

Packing
Pack like items from the same room.  Don’t mix your toiletries with cookwear. Keep like items together and then label the boxes with the box content and the room where it belongs. Better yet, color code your boxes with magic markers or a strip of colored tape.

Take great care with breakable items and other valuables. Wrap breakable items well and be sure to label these boxes fragile.  Another precaution might be to pack these important items in a different kind of box than everything else.

Tape those boxes well by securing both the top and bottom seams. Also be sure to use the right kind of box for the job. Heavy items like books and dishes should go in small boxes. Light items like bedding can be packed in large boxes.

Also be sure to fill those boxes to prevent shifting in the box and to cut down on the number of needed boxes. Gaps can be filled with towels or out of season clothing.

If you must disassemble furniture, store all the small parts in a Ziplock bag. Label the bag and then securely tape it to the back of that piece of furniture. Keeping parts and pieces together and safe will save much heartache later, say when screws are missing from your child’s bed.

Moving clothes can be a challenge. One option for moving clothes on hangers is to take a tip from the dry cleaner. Cut a hole in the bottom of a large trash bag and slide the bag over the items on hangers. Items will clean and together and can easily be carried straight from the truck to the closet. Have items in dresser drawers? Leave them in the drawers and cover with Saran Wrap or Press and Seal to keep everything in place.

Look out for Fido
Moving can be a traumatic experience for children and pets. While the doors are open and people are moving about, be sure to keep pets secured in a crate or a room where there is not activity. Not only might they be underfoot, a frightened pet could run outside and be lost.

Then be sure to keep their travel experience as calm and pleasant as possible, especially if you know your pet is a poor traveler. When you arrive at the new home, create a pet space that they will recognize by providing them with familiar bedding, bowls, food and favorite toys.

Are you thinking about buying a home? Contact your local VCNB office to speak with a lender in your neighborhood. Do you have a great moving tip? Share it in the comments below!

VCNB: We’re The Bank For You

Construction - FBBC (Nauman Digital)

Doug DeLong

Doug DeLong is a Lender at the Salt Creek Banking Center in Laurelville

If you’ve seen one of our billboards or heard our current radio spot, you know we say that if you want to redo your home or build new, we’re the bank for you. We hear from countless customers that building a home with VCNB financing is easy or that they love our Home Equity Line of Credit. So we chatted with one of our lenders to find out what he believes our customers like best about financing these types of projects with us.

Doug DeLong is a Loan Officer in our Salt Creek Banking Center in Laurelville. He has worked in this office for thirteen years and is a favorite among customers around Laurelville. He expressed excitement about the construction and home equity loan specials VCNB is currently offering. “There are many things that set our bank apart, and these products are at the top of the list,” DeLong said.

Building a home can be an intimidating process for the customer but DeLong said he works to make the financing part as easy as possible. “We pride ourselves on being available to the customer and their contractor for communication during the important building process,” he said. “Frequent communication is necessary. We inspect the home each time a contractor requests a draw from the loan. We also speak to the customer before releasing the funds to the contractor to make sure the customer is happy with the work thus far.”

One thing that sets apart VCNB from many other banks is the turnaround time for loan draws. “There are typically no cumbersome delays in the draw process, as there are at many of the larger banks. Quite often, we can have an inspection done on a home and have the draw disbursed the same day! I doubt this is ever the case at the large banking institutions,” DeLong ventured. “We make it a priority to be prompt, knowing how important it is to the customer.”

He indicated there are many advantages when it comes to the VCNB Home Equity Line of Credit as well. “No closing costs is one big plus.* The rates and easy ability to access your money are others. And, as always, the great customer service continues to set us apart.”

VCNB does have a HELOC special that makes this project even more rewarding for the customer at this time. Click here to read about the special which expires May 15, 2016.

DeLong expressed how easy it to is love his job when he feels like the customer comes first and the loan products are good for the customer. “I like seeing dreams come true for my customers. A new home is one of the biggest dreams people have in life – it’s rewarding being involved in that process. These are just a few reasons I am proud to work at VCNB, a bank that truly cares about our customers’ well-being!”

*There are no closing costs unless the amount of the loan is over $100,000. Borrowers will be assessed fees for title, insurance and survey. If the loan is closed within three years, borrower will be assessed a $500 fee.

Ask A Lender: What Is A HELOC?

We introduced a new HELOC special earlier this week and it occurred to us that while bankers like to talk in abbreviations, everyone may not know about a HELOC and what it means. So we asked Cassie Stout to help us out and explain a HELOC. Cassie is the Manager of the Ross County Banking Center on E. Main Street in Chillicothe. As a Retail Banker, she is able to address all of a customer’s needs including help with loans and deposits. She has been with us since 2006 and is a popular fixture at our Ross Main Office.

Cassie Stout

Here’s what she had to say:

What is a HELOC?
HELOC stands for Home Equity Line of Credit and is a way to turn the equity in your home into cash.

Why would someone want or need a HELOC?
HELOCs are great for home improvement projects like kitchen and bath renovations, a new garage, or really any upgrade. A HELOC is also good to have if you need cash out for debt consolidation or to fund big life expenses like college or special occasions.

What are the costs related to a HELOC at VCNB?
We offer HELOCs with little to no upfront (closing) costs, and also waive the annual fee for the first year! After that, the annual fee is just $50*.

Why should someone apply for a HELOC at VCNB?
VCNB HELOCs are a great deal for many reasons. The application process is easy, plus we have great rates and low fees.

What do you wish customers knew about a HELOC that they don’t think to ask?
When you open a HELOC with us, you get great payment flexibility for a full fifteen years. That means you can pay just your interest or pay off more at any time. This is a good setup for my borrowers because they can use their HELOC for their initial purpose (like home renovations), but can then have the security of an available credit line for many years to come.

Learn about our current special at our website!

*A Home Equity Line of Credit in an amount over 100,000 will require title insurance and survey fees to be paid.
