Thanksgiving Reflections

Thursday is Thanksgiving and here at VCNB we are preparing to be closed for the holiday. All of our seventeen locations, including Customer Service, will be closed so our employees may celebrate the holiday with their families.

As we contemplate the holiday and its meaning, we wanted to share with you a few quotes about Thanksgiving and gratitude. Plus there’s one at the end from the great Johnny Carson to make you laugh!

From all of us at VCNB, we wish you a safe and Happy Thanksgiving. After being closed for the Thanksgiving holiday Thursday, we will resume regular business hours Friday.

Enjoy!

Welcome Citizens Bank of Ashville Customers!

The VCNB financial family is growing! We are excited to welcome the customers and employees of The Citizens Bank of Ashville to VCNB.

VCNB and Community Bancshares, Inc. have announced the completed acquisition of The Citizens Bank of Ashville, effective the close of business on Friday.

The offices, located in Ashville, Circleville, Grove City and Commercial Point, enlarge the VCNB footprint and provide VCNB customers a total of seventeen locations for their banking needs. When they opened today, the Ashville, Circleville and Commercial Point branches began operations as Pickaway County Banking Center. The Grove City location now operates as Franklin County Banking Center.

As our family grows, we have been reflective about our origins and the core values that make us who we are.

We were founded in McArthur, Ohio in 1867. As a community bank, we take pride in adopting community identities everywhere we do business. This is evidenced in a variety of ways, starting with the names of our local branches and extending through community support initiatives and substantial employee volunteerism efforts.

Because we are a community bank, decisions are made locally. The loan officers, tellers and new accounts representatives you interact with daily live in your community and have a stake in the wellbeing, not just of the bank but of the people and towns where we do business. Our Customer Service Department is located in McArthur and the people you reach by phone or by online chat are invested in giving great customer service.

In short, we love our communities!

As you may imagine, there is a lot of work and detail involved in acquiring a bank and bringing those customers and employees into the VCNB family. That’s why we have created a Welcome Guide to help our new customers through the process.

If you are a new VCNB customer, WELCOME ABOARD! We are excited to have you with us and eager to get to know you. For the most part, the employees you are accustomed to seeing in your local offices haven’t changed. We may make some physical changes in the offices but you will receive the same great service you are accustomed to and deserve.

For now, our new Citizens customers will be able to bank and receive customer service assistance just in Ashville, Grove City, Commercial Point and Circleville. Starting on January 20, 2015, you will be able to bank at any of our seventeen locations.

You will be also hearing from us more over the next few months and hope you will feel welcome to contact us if you have questions.

Our existing customers can begin banking in the new locations today. We now have seventeen offices in Vinton, Ross, Hocking, Fairfield, Licking, Pickaway and Franklin counties.

Do you have questions? We would love to hear from you! Remember, following this blog is a great way to keep up with VCNB news. You can also follow us on Facebook and Linkedin. Check our website for updates as well.

Embracing Holiday Charities

One of the things VCNB employees love most about the holidays is the charitable work that we do during this season of giving. Each of our offices embraces a local charity, something important to their community, every year at about this time.

Several of our branches are currently accepting monetary donations for local food pantries. In addition to accepting donations from customers and the public, the bank is also contributing. These monetary donations to our local food pantries not only stay in the community but feed a large number of our neighbors as well.

Customers can donate toys to Hocking County Children's Services by bringing an unwrapped toy to the Hocking Hills Banking Center.

Some of our branches are focused on projects that relate to kids in the communities. For example, our branches in Wilkesville and Laurelville are accepting donations for their local Project Backpack programs.

Project Backpack sends non-perishable foods home with kids for the weekend. Things like apple sauce, microwavable soups, granola bars and pudding cups are popular donation items. You can either donate non-perishable food items or cash for this great cause. Our employees in these branches have been avid supporters of Project Backpack for many years and we are proud of the work they have done to support this much needed program.

Our Logan office is helping make Christmas brighter for kids in Hocking County by collecting toys for Hocking County Children’s Services. If you stop by that office, you will see a Christmas tree decked out in toys. Those toys along with others will be donated for the Children’s Services holiday program. While the bank is donating, and several of our employees have donated toys, the public is also invited to bring in unwrapped toys.

Our McArthur office embraces the holiday by raising money throughout the year to buy gifts for kids in need. That office adopts families through the Helping Hands project at Jobs and Family Services (JFS) in Vinton County. Employees participate in year round fundraisers and look forward to adopting families.

When JFS announced this year that it can no longer offer Helping Hands, a new group called Operation Christmas Presence formed to take its place. The staff in McArthur has signed on to help this new organization bring Christmas to approximately 200 local children. Monetary donations can be made to the Operation Christmas Presence account at VCNB.

By adopting families and helping to raise additional funds through various avenues, the McArthur office is excited to be part of this new community venture.

Want to get involved? Stop by your local branch to find out how you can become involved in VCNB holiday giving this year.

Budget, Plan For Holiday Fun

What’s your style when it comes to holiday shopping? Do you wait until Christmas Eve to start buying or do you have everything purchased and wrapped before December? What’s your spending style? If you’re like millions of Americans, you may not worry about the money until the credit card bill hits your mailbox.

What if we told you that with a little bit of planning Christmas spending can be less stressful and more fun? The key to alleviating the strain comes from two sources: Budget and Planning.

First you need to review your finances and determine how much you are able to spend on holiday related expenses. Once you have that amount, it’s time to start making a list.

A great place to start with planning this year’s holiday is to consider how much you spent last year. If you don’t remember or have notes from last year, that’s ok. Just start by making a list of every person you give to and every holiday expense.

Budgeting and planning are the best ways to stay on track during the holidays. Even Santa makes a list and checks it twice!

Budgeting and planning are the best ways to stay on track during the holidays. Even Santa makes a list and checks it twice!

Be sure to include the name of every person you shop for including your child’s teacher, your pastor or hair stylist. Add to that list other things you buy such as stocking stuffers, holiday meals, baking supplies, gift wrap, postage and shipping, Christmas cards, home décor and Christmas tree, travel expenses, charitable donations and anything else you buy or do that is extra (including post-holiday sales).

Next to each category, set a spending limit. Once you have set a spending limit on each category, add it up to make sure you are within your holiday budget. If not, check that list again to determine whether there are places to save.

Once you have a balanced budget, take a deep breath. You are halfway there!

The next step is to track spending throughout the season. Keep a running total of your purchases. If you go over budget in one category, don’t panic – just look for ways to save someplace else.

What are some practical ways to stay on track and under budget?

  • Shop with a list. When it comes to gift giving for your family, it’s a good idea to ask everyone for a wish list. This will give you a place to start and hopefully insure that everyone gets something they really want. At the very least, spend a little time brainstorming gift ideas for each person before you go shopping.
  • Be a smart consumer. If your husband requests new Blu-ray player, don’t wait until you’re in the store to think about what to get. Research online, read product descriptions and customer reviews before you say “I’ll take it.”
  • Think outside the box, the box store, that is. Consider gifts that don’t come from the mall. That cute little shop downtown may sell handmade scarves or jewelry that would make a unique gift for your mother-in-law. The candle store next door makes relaxation candles that your child’s teacher would love. Small businesses in your community often sell items you can’t find at a large retailer and the small business owner will truly appreciate every dollar you spend with them.
  • Start now. Don’t wait until the last minute to start buying. You can take your time researching the right product, cost compare and have a more pleasant buying experience when you’re not pressured to buy.
  • Use credit wisely. Many financial experts recommend shopping with cash or debit card to curb any urges to overspend. If you want the rewards points from your credit card or need to delay paying for Christmas until the first of the year, be mindful of every dollar.
  • Talk to your family about holiday priorities. Encourage them to focus more on the joy of the holidays – on spending time together decorating the tree, baking cookies and watching holiday movies – rather than on a ton of expensive gifts under the tree.

Finally, be sure to keep a record of your holiday expenses so you have a starting point for next year’s budget.

One other quick tip that could help you for next year is a Christmas Club savings account. At VCNB, you can set the amount you would like to save and we divide that amount into 26 bi-weekly deductions from your checking or savings account. In mid-October, you will receive a check or direct deposit for the amount you saved so you will have cash in hand for next year’s holiday budget.
