Checking + Savings = $150
The month of March is beginning to dwindle, as is the time you have left to take advantage of our Checking + Savings promotion! Do you know that you could potentially earn $150 simply for opening new checking and savings accounts with us this month?
Here’s the deal: Open a Checking My Way or Classic checking account and accept a debit card to be eligible for a $100 cash bonus. If you open a Passbook savings account at the same time as the checking, you will be eligible for a $50 cash bonus.
To receive your bonus, you must make a minimum $100 deposit into the checking account and accept a debit card. A $100 deposit will be made into this account within thirty days of the date you meet these requirements.
For the savings account bonus, the $50 cash deposit will be made into the account within thirty days after you make the $100 minimum deposit into your new savings.
The Passbook savings account has an Annual Percentage Yield (APY) of .10%. The Classic checking account has an APY of .10% for balances over $250. The Passbook savings account will incur an early close penalty of $20.00 if it is closed within 60 days of opening. Rates current as of 02/01/2015 and are subject to change. Fees could reduce earnings.

Local Business Spotlight: From Kitchen To Storefront
We understand that being a small business owner is tough. That’s why we plan to spotlight a different business each month to help you learn about unique businesses in your own back yard.
One local woman is taking her passion for baking from kitchen to storefront. Country Cakes and Bakes owner Beth Spangler will soon open a retail location after years of tempting Pickaway County sweets lovers with her home baked goods.
From elegant wedding cakes to Bob the Builder on a little boy’s birthday cake, Spangler is known in the community as someone who can do it all. While her specialty is custom designed cakes, she makes other baked goods by request including cookies, brownies and other temptations in small, made-from-scratch batches.
Spangler started her culinary journey at the Pennsylvania Culinary Institute in Pittsburgh, a Le Cordon Bleu school. After graduating in 2007 she completed an externship in Wisconsin. She then returned to Ohio to work in a Columbus bakery and sell baked goods at farmer’s markets in Circleville and Chillicothe.
Spangler said she loves being responsible for her own income and being her own boss and she enjoys the flexibility that comes with owning her own business. The most difficult part, she said, “is doing 17 jobs at once.”
She continues to bake from her home while preparing to open a storefront retail location in New Holland. The new store will be at 409 W. Front Street and is expected to open at the end of March.
Planned retail hours will be Thursday, Friday and Saturday as well as other times by appointment for customer pick-ups. Once settled in the new retail setting, Spangler plans to expand her offerings by producing cheesecakes, pastries and single serve items.

Clean Your Computer Today
When was the last time you cleaned out your computer? You may not know it but the second Monday of February each year is National Clean Out Your Computer Day.
Having unorganized files on your computer or mobile device is the equivalent of having a messy stack of papers on your desk. Can you easily find what you need?
It may seem like a silly thing to mark with a holiday and an even sillier holiday for your bank to observe but we think it’s very timely. In this age of technology where so much of what we do for work, play and life in general relies on our devices, it’s a good idea to maintain that equipment just like you would change the oil in your car or clean your house.
Think about, not just your computer, but your tablet and phone as well. How much content do you have stored on those devices and how much is unnecessary or difficult to find?
Take a look at the files, programs and apps on your device. Do you still play that Angry Birds game on your phone? Have you ever used the calorie counting app you downloaded on the first day of your diet? No? Delete them. Unused and useless apps and programs eat up a lot of space and clutter up your screen.
Take a closer look at your files. Are you holding on to files that you will never use again? Do you have duplicate files? Do you have junk files or empty folders? This is a good time to get rid of all that stuff. The more content you have, the harder it is to find what you need.
While you’re at it, consider the organization system you have for all that stuff. Can you find what you need? Is it organized into folders or just thrown into one big folder? Take a few minutes to sort all that stuff into a system that makes sense.
A word of caution: Remember to safeguard the things you love and need. Invest in a back-up system of some kind to store treasured family photos or important documents. A back-up device or even storing content in the cloud will save you a lot of heartache if your device crashes or if it is lost for some reason.
When you’re done, clean the exterior of your phone, tablet or computer and you’ll feel like you have a completely new device!

That’s how we feel about our checking and savings accounts here at VCNB. One is great but the two are even better together!
Think of your checking account as a place to manage your money. This is a transactional account from which you can make frequent withdrawals. You can do this by making debit card purchases at point-of-sale machines or by writing checks. You can make ATM withdrawals or come into the bank to withdrawal or deposit money. You can even pay bills online.
A savings account is a different kind of animal. Instead of using this account for daily transactions, a savings account is used for . . . you guessed it! Saving money!
It’s a great place to tuck away funds for an emergency or for a rainy day. If you’re planning a vacation or getting ready for Christmas, a savings account is a great option for keeping those funds separate from your daily spending money. While it’s kept in savings, your funds will grow some with interest.
Because federal law dictates that you can only make six savings withdrawals per month, this is a perfect place to park money and forget it until you actually need the cash. One time or periodic transfers of funds from your checking to savings make saving money much easier.
